Round 2: Africa

More on Facebook!

While visiting Cape Town we went on a tour of Robben Island, the prison where many political prisoner such as Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe were held. It was one of my favorite parts of the trip and was so educational. It was really fascinating.

In addition to political prisoners, at one time Lepers were quarantined here.

Once back on the mainland we came across some really talented musicians.

We also got to go on a mini-safari and see some awesome animals :-)

....including the rare and exotic Schaeffer girls ;-)

Our safari group! Charlie didn't get to come on this one...darn work!

Did you know the hippo is the most dangerous animal in Africa??

One of Grant my last night in town, with his spiffy new pashmina ;-)

Kaitlin & I were supposed to paraglide off this mountain, but sadly the weather didn't cooperate with us.

Some Africa Pictures...Finally!!

Well I'm finally getting around to sharing a few of my photos from my fabulous recent trip to Cape Town, South Africa! Quick recap: some of my favorite clients (not that I play favoritism ;-) moved to Cape Town recently. Kaitlin & Charlie graciously offered to let me come visit, and Kait's wonderful sis & brother in law Megan & Grant (whose wedding I also shot) came to visit at the same time. Needless to say, a fantastic time was had by all and I'm so thrilled to have had the opportunity to visit!

Without further ado, here are the first batch of photos. More coming tomorrow, and lots more will be up on Facebook then too.

This beautiful lady made the most gorgeous crocheted clothes (I may have bought a few items form her ;-)

Day 1 with Kaitlin!

The water may look beautiful, but it was COLD!!

The Gang :-) Kaitlin, Charlie, Megan & Grant.

How cute are these penguins??

I love entertaining the idea that this ostrich is also a tourist, just checkin out the view :-)

On top of Table Mountain

And a couple shots of my camera-shy couples ;-)

Shoot Day!

Last Saturday Josh & I held our second Shoot Day and it was just as fun as the first! It's really great to see newer photographers (and more seasoned ones, too) having such a great time shooting and experimenting. We definitely plan to hold more of these in the future, so if you haven't jumped on board yet, come out and play!

This day's attendees included:
Heather Cole, one of the most fabulous and fun chicas I know, made a special guest appearance...and we immediately put her to work doing the girls' hair :-) She just rocks like that.
Jeremy Arnold
Jolene Grabill
Patrick Scanlan
Jimmy Douglas
Sarah Chatham
Bethany Peasley
Amy Kuntz
Julie Branyan
Sharaya Mauck
Sarah Crawmer

This time around we focused on couples, and honestly - we couldn't have had better subjects! Jordan & Richard were our first couple - I'm sure everyone remembers her cuteness :-) And the one and only Ashley, my fabulous new studio manager, and her FIANCE (they just got engaged ;-) were our other gorgeous couple. Check out how much they worked it!

Quick Question

I had a question for you all though...2 questions actually. First of all, Josh & I have an idea...a challenge for you, but first want to see if there would be enough people who could participate (isn't this obnoxiously vague?) - please answer below:

And just for fun, one of the pics Josh snapped of Ashley & I "working" at the new studio ;-)

Calling hot redheads!

Hey girls! I'm in need of a very specific looking girl to be the face of a fantastic new store I'm involved with (details to follow :-) We need you to be tall and thin. Red headed...Long locks are a plus. No prior modeling experience required, but it would definitely help :-) Need to have a mature look - as in, you can't look like you're still in high school!

You must be available for shooting March 15 or 22 in Kansas City. You'll receive a CD of edited images for use in your portfolio. Ok, go!

EDIT: So there are a few more things we abandoned-feeling farmhouse, chickens...maybe some goats. Green grass is a plus. Barns. You get the idea. Ok, go again!

Wow. I seriously can't even say how much fun Josh & I's first Shoot Day mini-shop was. First we had the most beautiful weather ever (70 degrees...seriously!!) then were stoked at the huge response we received. We ended up with about 16 participants yesterday and they were all totally fabulous!! Everyone had a great time and we're definitely planning on holding these shoot days again, so stay tuned and be sure you've emailed Ashley ( if you're interested. And while you're at it, let us know what you'd be interested in learning!

Hope you enjoy my view of the day's images - we decided on an 80s Rock theme and I think our girls, Kristin & Jessica, ROCKED IT OUT, don't you??? (More on facebook, as usual!)

Starting with two of my favorites...

How about these girls' eyes?!?

And now for a little lighting magic!

Attack of the paparazzi!

No, for real - attack of the paparazzi!! :-)

Shoot Day!

So lately I have been getting a LOT of emails from aspiring photographers. While I looooove to help give advice and such, it's getting a little overwhelming for me! Therefore, I've decided to team up with Josh and offer a shoot day (afternoon, rather :-). This is going to be a super low-key, but super fun afternoon of shooting, learning, and experimenting. We'll provide a few models and show you some of our favorite techniques, including some off-camera lighting and a general Q&A.

The details....

When : Wed, Feb 25 @ 3:00 (it's Josh's birthday - bring him a cookie ;-) We'll just shoot till we're worn out!

Where : We'll be meeting at Josh & my new (not completely finished - don't judge ;-) studio in the City Market, and then wandering the area.

Who : Anyone who wants to learn! That being said, a basic knowledge of apertures, shutter speeds, ISO's, etc. is strongly recommended. We won't be starting at the very beginning this time.

How much : $50/person for this first time

Email Ashley ( if you're interested in joining us! We're thinking of offering more of these mini-shops in the future if we get a good response, so be sure and email even if you can't come to this one. Hope to see you there!

Introducing .... Peep Shows!

Finally, after much planning and thinking, it's time to announce the new baby in the Coquette family! I'm so excited to bring you Peep Shows! This is a collaborative project between myself, Katie (of Mink Artistry, who we all love for making us look more beautiful), and Melissa Robbins (who owns Nine Lives in Parkville - she has the most fabulous vintage style).

Peep Shows are the new girls' night out (or day in...whatever ;-). Invite your favorite girlfriends over (or have the show hosted at one of the fabulous downtown hotels we have arrangements with), have some wine, listen to some great music and get makeovers, customized scene styling and mini-Coquette shoots. It's a fabulous gift for the man in your life, and even more - for YOU!

We'll be hosting a few events in the near future so you can come meet the girls behind the curtain, as well as having a new fantastic website launch, but I just couldn't keep it to myself any longer!! Stay tuned for more info and start planning your own Peep Show!
